Continue the Conversation: after you've finished the book, use these discussion questions to kick off a good conversation about it.

• The Penderwicks spend their summer baking, writing, playing soccer, playing archery, feeding bunnies, and more. What are your favorite summer activities?

• Which character from The Penderwicks do you think you're most like? Why?

• Compare Mr. Penderwick and Mrs. Tifton as parents. In what ways is Mr. Penderwick a good father? In what ways is Mrs. Tifton a good mother?

• After Jeffrey saves Batty's life, the sisters make him an honorary Penderwick. What does that mean? How do you think he feels about it?

Creative Writing Prompts: Try out one or more of these creative writing prompts.

• Draw a map of what Mrs. Tifton's garden might look like. Be sure to include the giant urn Skye hides in, the marble statue, and the hedges around the border.

• After Rosalind and Skye both come home soaking wet on different occasions, Mr. Penderwick starts to worry that something similar will happen to Jane, too. Think of an event that could get Jane drenched and write a story about it.

• Rosalind writes letters to Anna about everything that happens over the summer. Write a letter to a friend or family member about something that happened to you recently. When you're done, ask your parents to help you mail it!
