Continue the Conversation: after you've finished the book, use these discussion questions to dig deeper into the themes.

• Read this quote from page 59: "Some sentences have the power to change everything. There are the usual suspects: I love you, I hate you, I'm pregnant, I'm dying, I regret to tell you that this country is at war. But the words with the greatest power to create both havoc and marvels are these: I need your help.'" Why can asking for help make such a big difference? When is it hardest for you to ask for help?

• Christopher and Mal have very different reactions to the idea of taking the potion that would make you remember the world's entire history. Which of them is right? How would you react if given that chance?

• Why does Marik say "No" to the world and to his gifts? Why does Mal say "Yes?"

• How is Mal's sacrifice at the end of the book like Jesus' sacrifice for us? How is it different?

Creative Writing Prompts: Write a paragraph (or more, if you'd like!) based on one of these prompts.

• Christopher only explores part of his grandfather's property. Imagine a different section of the Scottish land and describe it. Look up pictures of Scottish lochs or hills if you need some inspiration.

• Pick one of the mythical creatures Christopher meets and describe its typical day.

• The Glamry Blade and Mal's casapasaran both come from the Sailsman. What other things might be sold there? Draw a picture to go with your description.
